The fort commanded a large region and up to the late 13th century was the centre of a Hindu kingdom. Ranthambore has an impressive range of animal species within its 150 sq. miles (392 sq. km), including sambar, cheetal, nilgai, chinkara, wild boar, sloth bear, hyena, jackal, leopard and tiger.
